At this point on our web site, you may be wondering what fly-fishing has to do with RWI Group or venture capital. For starters, fly-fishing is the favorite pastime of Donald A. Lucas, RWI Group’s founder. As an avid fly-fisherman and venture capitalist, Don sees a number of parallels between these vocations.
In fly-fishing, as in venture capital, success is achieved through a combination of knowledge, experience, patience and foresight. A fly-fisherman first locates a suitable fishing location and then uses a variety of skills to attract the fish, while the venture capitalist identifies promising investment opportunities and then uses know-how and dedication to help companies to achieve success.
Both roles also contain elements of uncertainty. A successful fly-fisherman knows when to maintain a strategy and when circumstances call for a shift in plan. Similarly, no two venture capital investments are alike and a venture capitalist needs to adapt investment and management strategies in order to stay ahead of changing market conditions.
When seeking a name for a new venture capital firm in the fall of 1995, Don decided to use the initials from his favorite fly-fishing lure, the Royal Wulff, to create the Royal Wulff Investment Group, to be known as RWI Group. In venture capital, RWI Group applies many of the same lessons learned in fly-fishing.
